Executive Director, THE MARY FERRELL FOUNDATION (2005-2009)
•Two years after being hired as an intern, I became the Executive Director of the largest independent digital archive on modern American history in the world.
•There was no such things as a “Normal Day.” Project management. Marketing campaigns. Design. Video. Audio. Writing. Grant Writing. Contract Negotiation. Photo Editing. Royalty Calculation. Admin. Board Meetings. Budget. Sweeping. Tech support (read: unplug & plug back in).
•As but a wee intern, I cleaned up two weeks worth of Lyndon Johnson telephone calls, removing static, hiss, and other aural unpleasantries to make for a pleasant listening experience (as pleasant as listening to LBJ can get anyhow).
•Oversaw two massive site redesigns to make the MFF site look as authoritative as it was regarded.
•Aggressive linking, SEO, and social media strategies took us from page 33 of Google search results when I became ED (October, 2007) to page 1 within six months. Our site stats tripled, and the Foundation was mentioned on CNN, MSNBC, Salon, the Huffington Post, and Playboy.com.
•No. I’m not getting paid for this. And when I get emails saying “you guys,” it makes me smile.
•Why did I start MH? Because I was tired of not finding things I wanted to read. So I gathered up a group of cool people, and we wrote things.
•Also, I was bored, and I couldn’t function without running a website.
•Did you know that about 95% of all guest bloggers on MH come from Twitter? Yeah. It’s because I like communicating with people. And I do it well, for the most part. But hey, we all have our off days.
•For the first six weeks of MH’s existence as a contributor-driven blog, I ran a new article (sometimes more) EVERY DAY.
•What do I do? I play with and tweak code, I promote relentlessly - yet engagingly, I solicit people for articles, and on top of it, I write at least an article a week.
•Using the training I had from the Mary Ferrell Foundation, I designed MH the way I wanted it. Where I was lacking, I taught myself and figured it out.
•I’ve run articles from Oscar nominees (Frederick Marx of HOOP DREAMS), the small fries like me, and everyone in between.
•I’m a curator of content. I show things I want to see.
•After Blogger drove me insane, I switched over to a self-hosted Wordpress blog, complete with a svelte and minimalist redesign. And my stats jumped to the highest they’ve ever been.
•I’ve penned guest articles on some really groovy sites, like PULP TONE DOT COM, where I review TV shows, TV Producer Maria Lokken’s MARIALOKKEN.COM, and Debra Eckerling’s WRITE ON! ONLINE.
•My music doc, GATHER ‘ROUND THE MIC, was self-distributed & ended up as part of a Google Earth presentation at the Hamburg Music & Film Festival, courtesy of Wolfgang Jughans & Eumagine.tv
•I developed a web series for the Cleveland Professional 20/30 Group called HOT SHOTS @ HOT SPOTS, writing the script, figuring out a formula, editing the whole thing, and shooting the entire series, with the exception of the first, on a FLIP CAMERA. That was interesting.
•Most fun I’ve had - making a comic book trailer!
•Focused on self-distribution of everything from the start. I’m hard-wired for that, apparently.
•Made my first music video in 2007 - in Italian - (IL MIO CANTO LIBERO) using silent film footage from the Internet movie archive. I don’t speak Italian. And I still can’t tell you what the song is about.
•I’ve made everything from historical documentaries to field hockey scholarship videos to wedding videos to music videos in Italian.
•Again, I’m a stickler for creative, outside the box solutions to problems. Don’t throw money at problems - only use money when you’ve come up with a creative solution!
•I do A LOT OF STUFF on my movies & videos. Like: Writer, director, producer, editor, composer, cinematographer, and voice over artist. Plus more that I can’t recall.
•Creative Collaboration Philosophy - I love collaborating! It had just better come out better than I initially envisioned. Otherwise, there’s no point in collaboration.
•I roll with the punches, like in the case of my last video, OBVIOUSLY. The dogs wouldn’t be quiet or stop stuffing toys in our faces. Guess what? Instant supporting cast!
•Also, I write. A LOT... but more on that... now...
WHAT DO I WANT?
I want to challenge and be challenged. I want to help businesses grow through unique marketing strategies and embracing cutting-edge storytelling and video techniques.
But most importantly, I want to grow. I want to improve my skills, and expand my horizons. And I want to help you do the same.
I’d also like to be paid.
•Did I mention that my marketing budget was zero dollars?
•I came into the Foundation at the start of YouTube, and have been developing online video distribution strategies ever since - not only for Foundation projects, but my own work.
•Because my team was spread out all over the country, I telecommuted, teleworked, tele-project-managed or whatever you want to call it because I had no choice. As Tim Gunn would say, I thrive on “making it work.”
•Developed the “Wheaties Deal.” I would give authors and researchers full run of the MFF’s multi-million page archive for their work if they agreed to promote us in their books and in their media appearances. See CNN, MSNBC name drops above.
•Yes. The site dealt with the JFK assassination and really controversial stuff. And no, I’m not crazy.
•When I started with the Foundation, we had about 25,000 pages online. When I left, 1.5 million and growing.
•By the way, each of the video projects I made? The most expensive one was THE FOURTEEN MINUTE GAP. It cost a whopping $114. That final number was not by design.
•Maximizing resources is everything to me. Don’t spend money - come up with creative ways to solve your problem!
•Because the end user is the one who ultimately pays my salary, every project I directed (the Google SEO Project, the two site redesigns, the Green Server switch, and especially the Search Engine Pretty-Up Project) had our target audience in mind: What is most useful to them, and how can I make what we have more useable?
•The Green Server thing? By diligent research, and taking a scalpel to our budget, we slashed operating expenses in half, and explored and implemented a green server option - offsite, and secure - for the entire MFF website.
•And in December, 2008, I became an equal partner in the MFF operations, taking the title of Vice-President of the Foundation, in addition to all of my other duties as Executive Director (and more or less the de facto Creative Director).
•Above all else, I was sure to treat everyone who worked for/with me with the utmost respect and appreciation.
One More Thing...
No. I don’t have a college degree.
I neither make excuses nor take it easy. I work hard. And I work smart.
If I haven’t scared you off yet, great. If you think you’d like working with me, or having me work for you, contact me via email at

Hi.
I’ve done résumés the normal, one page, “pro speak” way. It’s just not me. Here’s what I’ve done in the past five years in my own words.
I’m considering this a “live document.” It’s going to be continually updated.
First up, the obvious...

TWO PHILOSOPHIES...
•Ideas are worthless without the ability to organize & execute them. I use my own hybrid version of David Allen’s “GETTING THINGS DONE” (GTD) methodology to bring in everything I do on time and under budget.
• True communication in today’s world lies in SHARING KNOWLEDGE, not keeping it bottled up and hoarding it like Gollum and his “Precious.”
