AND I LOVE TELLING STORIES.


As much as I love creating story experiences, be it through narrative films, comic books, documentary film or Etch-a-Sketch,  I also love experiencing great stories, and ensuring that that great stuff is experienced by as many eyes as possible.


For much of my “paid” life, I’ve been involved in marketing, whether I knew it at the time or not.  Since 2004, I have been creating and developing elements of marketing campaigns or entire marketing campaigns with a low-cost, high return goal. 


As I’ve been figuring out the magical question, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” I read Jon Reiss’ wonderful book THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX OFFICE, and in there, he proposed the creation of a new position in the film world - THE PRODUCER OF MARKETING & DISTRIBUTION (PMD).


Good answer.


So, the obvious question - WHAT’S A PMD?

MARKETING IS STORYTELLING.

“As a filmmaker, I have thought a lot of about complaints from filmmakers of all these new tasks that we are responsible for in distribution and marketing.  And this is how I came up with the concept of the Producer of Marketing and Distribution or PMD.   Just like you most likely did not make the film on your own, you should not be distributing and marketing the film on your own. I would argue that from now on, every film needs one person devoted to the distribution and marketing of the film from inception, just as they have a line producer, assistant director, or editor.  I gave this crew position the official title of PMD since we need to train people to do this task, give classes in it, write books about it, just as people are educated (or learn on their own) to become DPs.”

It was a wonderful feeling figuring out that all that sort of nebulous stuff I had been doing over the years actually had a title - the PMD. 


It’s the wild west out there in the land of movie distribution. And like it or not, it doesn’t matter how talented or wonderful you are, you’re nothing if you’re not seen.


I don’t care if you’re the next Scorsese - if no one knows about you, no one will see your story. And worst of all - no one will care.


I want to do all I can to ensure that your stories are seen - because there’s an ocean of content out there competing for everyone’s attention.
